It’s one year on and I find myself once again preparing for what must surely be the Argus of mountain biking. With it’s smooth open gravel roads and most descent than ascent, the Karoo to Coast is one of those rides that every mountain biker, new or experienced gets drawn to year by year. It’s 3000 rider strong entry list speaks volumes and must be one of the most well participated in ultra marathons in the world!
Last year you may remember me whipping out my full suspension as the weapon of choice to try mount the podium. Yes it was awesome having rear suspension to soak up those nasty corrugations, but this year I found myself leaning towards my Rocky Mountain Vertex hardtail again. If there would be a tag line for this years race it would be “Keep it simple!”
Now for the specs:
Frame: Rocky Mountain Vertex 999 RS:
Drivetrain: Sram XX1, gripshift shifter with 36 tooth front chainring for some extra speed on those fast descents (and possibly a sprint finish!).
Fork: RockShox Sid XX World Cup.
Wheels: NoTubes ZTR Race Gold with Geax Mezcal tyres. I have ridden these tyres at this event twice now and they are simply brilliant. Low rolling resistance, lightweight and ultra durable. Perfect for fast gravel roads.
Pedals: Look S-Track Race pedals. They provide an ultra stable pedalling platform.
Saddle: Fizik Thar 29er specific saddle.
Cockpit: Raceface Next SL.
Having last raced over more than a month ago, I must admit that my legs are itching to get going and see what I can do over the 100km distance, and who knows, maybe even mount the top step of that podium. Finally.
I will keep you posted on how it all goes. Fingers crossed.
Until then, keep it rubber side down.
