So the Moravian woods of the Czech Republic set the scene for the second round of the UCI mountain bike World Cup series this past Sunday. We made the trip from Gemany on the Monday where I spent the week in a house with 5 other South Africans getting to know the course, as well as trying to survive the icy winds that were blowing most of the week. Getting out required leg warmers on most days to survive the 8 degree temperatures.
Fortunately for the elite men’s race on Sunday the prediction of rain held off until 1 lap to go when the heavens opened up, but this didn’t change the outcome of the race. Nino Shurter galloped to the win with Julien Absalon on his heels, with Lukas Fluckiger 3rd, Thomas Litscher 4th, and Canadian Max Plaxton coming home to a career best in 5th.
